When to use offline recording

Offline recording is the most reliable way to capture a conversation, because it doesn’t depend on the network or live transcription while you record. Reach for it in these situations:
  • You’re on the move or somewhere with an unstable connection.
  • You can’t keep an eye on the screen, like during a talk or a lecture.
  • It’s a long recording that can’t afford to drop midway.
If you want to watch the text appear on screen as you speak, use Live Recording instead.
Offline recording works in the mobile app and the desktop app. It isn’t supported in the web browser.

Start recording

  • Mobile app: On the new note screen, [Offline] mode is selected by default. Tap [Record] to start right away.
  • Desktop app: On a new note, click [Start offline recording].
Add some context before you record to improve transcription accuracy, and pause and resume any time while recording.

What happens after you stop

1

Stop the recording

When you stop, the [Select recording language] screen appears. Tiro detects the language you spoke automatically, so you only pick the language to use for the transcript.
2

Automatic upload

If you’re online, the recording goes straight to the server and transcription begins. If you’re offline, the upload is queued and starts automatically the moment you reconnect.
3

Check your note

Once transcription finishes, a transcript and a summary note are created. If you turned on speaker separation on the Pro plan or above, Speaker Diarization is applied too.
Usage is deducted when your audio is transcribed, not while you record. Recording without transcribing yet doesn’t use up your quota.

Good to know while recording

  • Recording continues even when the screen is locked or you switch to another app.
  • The recording is saved to your device immediately, so it stays safe even if the app is force-quit.
  • A recording pauses automatically when a call comes in. After the call ends, tap resume yourself to keep going. Alarms and short notification sounds resume on their own.

Manage your recordings (mobile)

You can find your recorded audio files together on the [Manage audio files] screen.
  • Use [Play] to listen back, and delete files you no longer need.
  • For a recording you haven’t transcribed yet, tap [Create note] to convert it any time.
  • Select a single file to export the audio with [Share] without transcribing. This works only when the audio is still saved on your device.
  • Audio files stored on your device are protected so that other apps can’t access them.
Deleting a note also deletes the audio file stored on your device. To keep the audio on its own, export it with Share before you delete.

Start fast with a home screen widget

Add a widget to your home screen to start recording in one tap without opening the app. Android offers separate widgets for offline recording, live recording, and calendar events, while iOS gives you small and medium widgets to start recording right away.

FAQ

Does my quota get used if I record but never transcribe?

No. Usage is deducted at transcription time. That said, an untranscribed recording lives only on your device, so it’s safer not to put off uploading anything important.

Can a single conversation mix several languages?

Yes. Offline recording detects and transcribes conversations with mixed languages automatically. For multilingual conversations, we recommend offline recording over live recording.

Does it support speaker separation?

Yes, speaker separation is available on the Pro plan and above. Turn on the [Speaker Diarization] toggle in settings, and it applies when your offline recording is transcribed. See Speaker Diarization for details.

My recording stopped after I took a phone call.

When a phone or call app takes over the microphone, recording pauses automatically. Once the call ends, tap resume to keep recording.
